“Isabelle van Keulen played Elgar’s violin concerto with far more energy and brightness than is often heard, but didn’t sacrifice any of its heart. Her taut musical intelligence and vivid sound combined with a fine instinct for the tender, searching quality of this music…absolutely magical.” The Guardian

A violinist and violist of the highest calibre, Isabelle van Keulen has an established reputation on the worlds’ concert platforms.  She is one of the most sought after and charismatic musicians of her generation.

Van Keulen has appeared with such orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Bayerischer Rundfunk, NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Vienna Radio Symphony, Tonhalle Zürich, NHK Symphony Tokyo, London Philharmonic, The Philharmonia, the Hallé Orchestra, Netherlands, Royal Stockholm and Helsinki Philharmonics, the Minnesota Orchestra and Cincinnati and Toronto Symphonies. Conductors with whom she works include Thomas Dausgaard, Mark Elder, Valery Gergiev, Philippe Herreweghe, Neeme and Paavo Järvi, Sir Neville Marriner, Andris Nelsons, Sir Roger Norrington, Joseph Swensen, Osmo Vänskä, Hugh Wolff and David Zinman.

During the 2008/2009 season her recording of the Berg Violin Concerto, with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Mario Venzago, will receive its international release.  Widely acclaimed for her interpretation of this work, she will perform it with Gothenburg (when the disc is launched), Malmö and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras.  Further highlights of the season include performances of the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Berlin Konzerthausorchester - both in Berlin and as part of the Prague Autumn Festival - Dvorak Romance in F minor with Netherlands Radio Philharmonic and Richard Hickox, Berlioz Harold in Italy and the Nielsen Violin Concerto with NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover and both Beethoven Romances with Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Frans Brüggen.

In summer 2006 Isabelle van Keulen performed as Director-Soloist with the London Mozart Players at the BBC Proms. She continues to work in this capacity this season with LMP, as part of the orchestra’s 60th birthday celebrations, and also with Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, where she is now a regular guest.  She continues her role as violinist in the Leopold String Trio and also forms a new collaboration with mezzo Christianne Stotijn, in a performance at London’s Wigmore Hall in July 2008.  Van Keulen additionally continues her highly successful duo collaboration with pianist Ronald Brautigam, appearing again at the Wigmore in spring 2009.  Further ahead, in 2010, she and Brautigam will celebrate 20 years of duo performances. Having appeared as Artist in Residence at Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival in 2006, she returns this season to lead chamber music masterclasses and to give recitals herself.

Isabelle van Keulen’s latest duo recital disc with Ronald Brautigam was released in 2007 (on Challenge Classics) to great critical acclaim and a new duo disc is currently in post-production. Her extensive discography includes composers as diverse as Haydn, Bruch, Vieuxtemps, Saint-Saens, Stravinsky, Schnittke, Dutilleux and Erkki-Sven Tüür.

She plays a Joseph Guarnerius del Gesu violin from 1734 and her viola is made by Peter Greiner.
